Strengthen your career with an Advanced Diploma in Legal Practice through Irish from King’s Inns
Former student, and now senior counsel Ronan Munro SC, highlights the benefits of undertaking an Advanced Diploma in Legal Practice through Irish.
The aim of the course is to enable legal practitioners to practice their profession through Irish as well as giving an insight into this area of law to professionals working with the Law and the Irish language. The names of successful practitioners are added to the King’s Inns’ Irish language Register Clár na Gaeilge (Óstaí an Rí) pursuant to the Legal Practitioners (Irish Language) Act 2008.
Both civil and criminal aspects of practice are taught, as are drafting, advocacy, consultation and negotiation. Moot courts and mock trial form an integral part of the course and participants are afforded ample opportunity to get on their feet as well as exercises in drafting and terminology. An emphasis is placed on those areas of practice where work is done through Irish.
The law aspect of the course is taught Monday evenings (18:00–20:30) from the beginning of October to March. Participants also have the opportunity to attend classes in correct written Irish Wednesday evenings (18:00–21:00), an essential skill for those practicing through the language.
The Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht provides monetary support for this course.
“The Advanced Diploma in Legal Practice through Irish brought together my language, legal and advocacy skills and gave me the confidence to conduct cases in court through Irish. The precidents contained in the course materials are a very valuable resource indeed.
Regarding work, a few short weeks after finishing the course, I was briefed in an indictable criminal matter which I was to conduct through Irish,”
Ronan Munro SC.
