Meet the Teaching Team
#4 Tricia Sheehy Skeffington BL
“I’m the course coordination on the Advanced Diploma in Quasi–Judicial Decision–Making, which is an innovative course designed to give the theory and skills necessary for sitting as an adjudicator, tribunal member or supporting the administration of those crucial tasks.
I was called to the Bar in 2006 and have an LLM from Aberystwyth University (Environmental Law). My route to law was scenic, taking in journalism, TV production and social policy on the way. I did my Diploma in Law in the King’s Inns while working full time, so I know what it’s like to balance work, life and study.
I have a broad civil practice with intellectual property and administrative/regulatory law dominating. I sit on a number of quasi–judicial bodies (currently the Mental Health Tribunal, the Criminal Injuries Compensation Tribunal, previously the RTB’s Tenancy Tribunal). I do a lot of training for regulators in their decision–making functions.’’
Tricia has the following advice for someone planning to take the course:
‘’Jump in and enjoy! It’s structured so that lectures lead into highly interactive tutorials, where you learn by doing and in discussion with colleagues.
There are many benefits of taking the Advanced Diploma in Quasi–Judicial Decision–Making course but digesting the views of the judiciary and experienced decision–makers (many of whom give lectures on the course) and other course participants (many of whom work as, or with decision–makers) gives a unique blend of the standards that should be achieved and how to go about achieving them.
I also love that this is a moving field, especially since the Zalewski decision, so it’s fulfilling to assist people update their practice.“
