Welcome to the 2015 – 2016 BL Class
Today we welcomed the 2015–2016 Barrister–at–Law class to King’s Inns and had a lively time as we all worked through the induction process together. The BL class were addressed this morning by Ms Justice Mary Finlay Geoghegan and Ms Sara Moorhead SC who both spoke about the life in the law for which this professional course is a preparation.
Prizes were presented to the recipients of the McCarthy Bursary and the Arthur Brown prize which is awarded to the student who comes first in the annual Entrance Examination. The McCarthy Bursary honours Mr. Niall McCarthy of the Supreme Court and his wife Barbara who both died in a tragic road accident in Spain in 1992. The scholarship covers Barrister–at–Law admission fees and a maintenance grant as well as a student internship to European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.
Congratulations to this year’s McCarthy Bursary winner Mr. Joe Holt, who also won the Arthur Brown prize for first place in the Entrance Examination. Exceptionally this year, a second prize was given from the McCarthy Bursary to Mr. Gerard Downey. Congratulations.
The theme of the competitive essay for the McCarthy Bursary this year was the recent Supreme Court decision clarifying the laws on evidence in relation to “The Exclusionary Rule”.
Further details about the McCarthy Bursary can be found here.
